GT5 GreenCell Technologies: HYDROGEN USE AS A MOTOR FUEL

There are several ways that hydrogen can be used as a motor fuel. It can be used to directly replace gasoline or diesel fuel in specially designed internal combustion engines (ICEs), or it can be used to supplement these typical fuels in existing engines. In either of these cases, the vehicle drive system will be identical to those used on most gasoline-powered or diesel-powered vehicles. The engine will drive the vehicle’s wheels through a transmission, drive shaft, and front or rear axle.

 

Hydrogen can also be used as the fuel source for a “fuel cell engine,” in which case the vehicle’s drive system will be very different. A fuel cell directly creates electricity, which can be used to power an electric motor to drive the vehicle’s wheels. A fuel cell vehicle is, therefore, an electric vehicle, but one that creates its own electricity and does not need to be plugged in to recharge batteries. A small fuel cell can also be used to create electricity to directly power the auxiliary systems on a commercial truck (for example heating, air conditioning, and lighting in a sleeper berth), which are typically powered by the truck’s main engine. Using such a fuel cell auxiliary power unit (APU) would allow the driver to shut off the truck’s main diesel engine while resting, saving fuel and reducing pollution.

 

Regardless of whether the hydrogen will be used in a fuel cell main engine, a fuel cell APU, or an internal combustion engine, there are different ways that it can be stored on the vehicle. As described below, these different storage technologies can introduce significantly different potential hazards, including very high pressure (gaseous hydrogen storage), very low temperature (liquid hydrogen storage), or high temperature (liquid fuel reforming).

 

GT5 GreenCell Technologies: Currently both fuel cells and hydrogen ICEs are in the early stages of commercialization. All of the major auto companies have fielded concept, prototype, or demonstration fuel cell sedans and sport utility vehicles in the last several years, with at least fifteen different models introduced since 2000 (Barnitt and Eudy, 2005; USFCC, 2006). Most of these vehicles have been operated by the companies themselves or have been fielded to government agencies and fleet customers as part of technology development or demonstration programs. The California Fuel Cell Partnership reports that its members have placed 134 light-duty fuel cell vehicles in service in California since 2000 (CAFCP, n.d.). In addition, there are currently nine fuel cell transit buses in service in the United States and Canada, and over 20 in Europe and Asia (Chandler and Eudy, 2006).

 

It is expected that commercial fuel cells will be introduced into government and transit bus fleets between 2010 and 2020, with sales to commercial vehicle fleets and the public sometime between 2020 and 2030 (DOE, 2002). It is also expected that the first use of hydrogen fuel in the commercial truck sector will be to power fuel cell APUs rather than to power fuel cell or hydrogen ICE main propulsion engines. At least one company has announced plans to introduce commercial fuel cell APUs as early as 2011 (Delphi, 2005).

 

GreenCell Technologies Inc  is a Canadian company dedicated to designing and bringing to market, technology-based products in the alternative energy market. Mazda Rx-8 Hydrogen Re to Be Shown in Ons2006 Exhibition

In the 2004 North American International Auto Show, the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE concept car was unveiled. Although the show did not feature Mazda MX6 parts, Mazda had stolen the show when they featured the RX-8 rotary engine system that was designed to run on two different fuels, hydrogen and oxygen.

Following the success of the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE in Japan last March, the Mazda Motor Corporation will present the RX-8 Hydrogen RE at the ONS2006 (Offshore Northern Seas 2006). The ONS2006 is an energy exhibition that will be held in Stavanger, Norway from August 22 to 25. The exhibition will feature the international concern on energy conservation and challenges encountered in the energy industry.

Along with the ONS2006, the national HyNor Project will open the first hydrogen filling station in Norway to promote the utilization of hydrogen as an alternative fuel.

“The hydrogen station in Stavanger is the first step of a long and exciting journey for hydrogen, and we are very proud to have Mazda present at the opening. Hydrogen has always suffered from the classic chicken-and-egg debate. The car manufacturers wait for a fuel distribution network to be set up, and the fuel suppliers wait for cars to be produced. In the end we decided to take a risk and build the first station and as you can see, the first cars have already arrived,” said Brage W. Johansen, Manager of Hydrogen Group, Statoil ASA and member of the HyNor National Board.

The auto industry has seen the increase in the demand for eco-friendly vehicles as the global community becomes more aware of the threats of global warming. To address the demand, car manufacturers have been investing in the development of eco-friendly vehicles.

Ford Australia President Tom Gorman said that “Ford Australia is proud to extend our relationship with the University of Melbourne through this important project.” The study will not only focus on the practical use of hydrogen as fuel for vehicles but also on the production of hydrogen.

While hydrogen is abundant, it combines with other elements. So, therefore, for it to be used as fuel, it has to be extracted first. Another problem in the use of hydrogen as fuel is the construction of fuel cells. As of today, fuel cells are fragile and can only withstand low vibrations which means that the current technology is impractical for off-road vehicles since the bumps encountered during off-road driving can severely damage the whole fuel cell assembly.

The participation of Ford on the hydrogen research is not surprising since the company is one of the leading car manufacturers which have already been investing on alternative fuel development. Gorman has this to say about Ford’s dedication to the development of alternative fuel vehicles: “Globally, Ford Motor Company is a leader in the development of alternative fuel vehicles and technologies. The Escape Hybrid, our range of E85-capable flexi-fuel vehicles, and the recent showcasing of the world’s first drivable fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle with plug-in capability are all examples of our broader global efforts.”

Gorman added that: “The University of Melbourne project is the first to research hydrogen engine alternatives using an Australian sourced engine, and will be an important complement to these initiatives.” The University of Melbourne will be aiming to produce a hydrogen fueled six-cylinder engine from Ford. The technology being developed at the university is called the Hydrogen Assisted Jet Ignition or HAJI for short. This technology when used in a car can provide a performance similar to that of a car equipped with a
Neuspeed cold air intake system.

Toyota has worked around the cost of its fuel-cell vehicles by reducing cost up to 90 percent, since last decade. Now it hopes to price its first hydrogen model car for ,000.

The first model will be a sedan with driving range equal to a gasoline-powered car, “with some extra cost,” Yoshihiko Masuda, Toyota’s managing director for advanced autos, tells Bloomberg News.
