Consumer Reports Cited Fuel Efficient Suvs

Consumer Reports Cited Fuel Efficient Suvs

With the prices of gas and fuel increasing steadily, consumers tend to turn their backs on the sport utility vehicle (SUV) market. Sports utility vehicles after all has a reputation for being gas guzzlers and that is why most consumers now opt for more fuel efficient smaller cars like a sedan or a coupe.

But the versatility and the loading capacity of an SUV is hard to match, even by large sedans. That is why Consumer Reports came out with a list of the most fuel efficient SUVs to help consumers choose the right kind of vehicle that would suit their needs and wants as well as their budgets. The list of the best and worst SUVs when it comes to fuel economy is the result of a battery of tests that were performed by Consumer Reports on the SUVs that are currently available in the market.

“With more crossovers, hybrids, and car-based SUVs entering the market, it’s now much easier to find an SUV that gets gas mileage similar to a midsized sedan,” Rik Paul, the Automotive Editor for Consumer Reports, quipped. The editor also pointed out that consumers can save a lot of money that is usually spent on fuel simply by doing research before choosing a car to buy. And the magazine has provided prospective car buyers with a comprehensive list of the best and the worst fuel efficient SUVs in the market so as to aid them in choosing a vehicle.

Aside from giving their readers an idea which vehicles are noteworthy, they also showed them which vehicles to avoid where fuel economy is concerned. The information presented by Consumer Reports is a great help to prospective car buyers. What can be more helpful though are the pieces of information about choosing aftermarket parts for the vehicle like EBC brake rotors or other car parts.

Some of the sport utility vehicles tested by Consumer Reports posted gas mileage which is similar to that of a conventional family sedan. Models like the Ford Escape Hybrid, the Saturn Vue Green Line, and the Toyota RAV-4 model that uses a 4-cylinder engine each posted 23-26 miles per gallon, and that is not far from gas mileage ratings achieved by some sedans. While there are SUVs that boasts of good fuel economy, there are also those that would burn a hole in your pocket with gas mileage ratings that seem to use up each gallon of fuel faster than you can say jag. Small SUVs which have performed poorly on the fuel economy tests are the Kia Sorento LX, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, and the Jeep Liberty Sport.

The tests conducted by Consumer Reports gave a result of an equally weighted average of city, highway, and one-day trip gas mileage ratings. For the city driving gas mileage rating, Consumer Reports simulated stop-and-go driving with a total of 18 stops, four minutes of idling, and speeds reaching up to 40 miles per hour. For the highway mpg rating, testers drove the vehicles through eight 5-mile laps with a constant speed of 65 miles per hour.

To find out the gas mileage rating of the vehicles for a one-day trip, testers pushed the vehicles through 155 miles in a day. The trip is constituted by 26 percent freeway driving, 11 percent two-lane highway, and 63 percent varied countryside roads with turns and minute elevation differences. The tests conducted show the overall performance of the vehicles in terms of fuel economy, other components of the vehicles were not tested.

Other noteworthy SUVs in the midsize segment are the Lexus RX400h, with a gas mileage rating of 23 miles per gallon, and the Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited which posted 22 miles per gallon. The BMW X3 3.0si, the Nissan Murano, and the Toyota Highlander Limited also posted good gas mileage ratings of 19 miles per gallon. Consumer Reports however did not find any vehicle in the large SUV segment with unusually good gas mileage figures.

Fuel Efficient American Vehicles Generates Interest

Fuel Efficient American Vehicles Generates Interest

The auto industry is changing as the demand for fuel efficient vehicles increases. The Big Three known for producing large vehicles are now in the process of developing and producing fuel efficient vehicles. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have been facing their toughest battle yet with Asian car manufacturers who come to the United States auto market with fuel efficient vehicles. In order to stem the tide, the Big Three began developing smaller vehicles.

General Motors came up with the Saturn Aura while Ford sent out the Edge. Chrysler, on the other hand, entered with the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. These three models are currently catching the attention of car buyers. The popularity of these three auto modes may lead some to think that the vehicles are the best selling auto models of their respective manufacturers.

In reality, these vehicles are just becoming popular among car buyers and the larger vehicles produced by General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are still their best selling models. These fuel efficient vehicles show the way for the future of auto production for the Big Three. The American car manufacturers have been criticized for not coming up with such vehicles as the price of gasoline continue to increase. The arrival of the Aura, Edge, and Wrangler Unlimited though shows that even Detroit is jumping on the bandwagon of carmakers manufacturing fuel misers.

The popularity of these vehicles creates a “halo” effect. This means that the fuel efficient vehicles generate interest among car buyers. Interested individuals will then go to a dealership to inquire about the particular gas miser. Dealerships also display other auto models which car buyers would never consider if they have not seen it personally. This means that car manufacturers not only benefit from the sale of these fuel efficient vehicles but the sale also creates a way for them to introduce other auto models to car buyers.

“They are standard bearers for those brands and represent what those brands are about,” says Jack Nerad, the executive market analyst at Kelley Blue Brook as to the significance of these fuel efficient American cars. “They’re game-changers for brands trying to redefine themselves,” he added.

The disparity between sales of these fuel efficient vehicles compared to large vehicles is still great though. According to data provided by General Motors, they have sold 4,323 units of the Saturn Aura in April this year, complete with its standard features and is made easily available with Saturn roof racks. While the number of Auras sold for a single month is respectable, it pales in comparison to the number of Chevrolet Silverados which is reported to be at 49,436 units just for the month of April.

For Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford Motor Company, the best selling auto model is the Ford F-Series. In April of this year, Ford sold 56,692 F-Series trucks. That eclipsed the total number of the Ford Edge sold for the same month which according to Ford is 9,134 units. The same can be said between the Wrangler and Chrysler Group’s best selling Dodge Ram. For the month of April, 10,776 units of the Jeep Wrangler were sold but the 31,503 units of Dodge Rams sold for the same month shadows that sales feat.

Used BMW – Choosing an Efficient Car

Used BMW – Choosing an Efficient Car

I don’t know about you, but I find all the different varieties of efficient cars on the market a little bit confusing. It isn’t the basic concept – I understand the important of miles per gallon, I understand what is good and what is bad, I am even starting to understand CO2 emissions levels – but something keeps stopping me from understanding it all fully.

That something may well be the sheer range on the market. There are hundreds if not thousands of difference models, each with a unique set of stats regarding how economical they are. Even worse, every single car seems to use a different set of words to represent their most economical engines – SXI, CDTi, sports versions, green versions, hybrids and electric models. Keeping on top of which is good and which is bad is, quite frankly, something of a challenge.

Of course, looks have to be involved – much like saying you love someone entirely for their personality, it is unlikely to be completely accurate! Economy has to be one element of picking a car, but only one – you still need to remember all the facts about drive, speed, power, torque – and with such a huge collection of figures and information you could be forgiven for getting totally bamboozled.

One of my top tips for choosing an efficient car effectively and still with an element of passion, is to focus on a few brands rather than the entire market. Do a bit of research (asking around friends, reading reviews and what not), and choose some brands who generally produce cars you love the look of and that you love the way they drive. Personally I narrowed it down to a few brands, and then looked a little deeper into each one.

One of my favourite brands was BMW, who as you know produce an extensive range of cars, some of which are more efficient than others. I already knew I needed a small car, preferably from their one series, so the likelihood of them being economical was higher than with massive huge engined cars. That said, never assume that a smaller engine means a more economical engine. Quite often brands will only put their fancy technology on the slightly higher spec models, meaning that a 2.0 litre can often be more efficient than a 1.4 litre! Odd, eh?!

BMW call their efficiency technology BMWEfficientDynamics, and their 1 Series hatchbacks tend to be equipped with it throughout, probably to meet with certain governmental green requirements. They aren’t the most economical on the market, but they manage a brilliant 46.2 mpg combined for the little 3 door model.

What I did at this point was compare the more in depth understanding I had of the BMWs economy and green credentials with a couple of my other favourite car brands. This meant there were fewer crazy complicated terms flying around, and I could focus neatly on which gave me the best combination of looks and fuel saving cost saving tech.

Milpitas new car customers will find Honda Odyssey not only ‘cool’, but fuel efficient

Milpitas new car customers will find Honda Odyssey not only ‘cool’, but fuel efficient

A minivan that’s fuel-efficient and might possibly avoid the minivan stereotype? That’s what the Honda Odyssey is shooting for and it’s hitting right on the mark. Your Milpitas new car dealer would love to help you take home a 2011 Odyssey, with a longer, wider design and remarkable mileage.

Honda has also lightened the load a bit and given the 2011 Odyssey a more striking profile. With plenty of room inside and a V-6 engine with six-speed automatic transmission getting 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, buyers will enjoy those family road trips with less bickering from the kids (“He touched me!”) and less worry from mom and dad (“Gas is how much?!”).

There’s a new standard feature – the Variable Cylinder Management system. This system automatically deactivates engine cylinders when they are not needed, such as a coasting situation. It was previously only found on top models.

But those road trips will not only be comfortable and more affordable, they will be relaxing with the navigation system voice recognition commands and song selection as well as a 16.2-inch split-screen display that can drop down from the ceiling for second and third seat passengers. Two movies at once? Not a problem. Movie versus video games? Why not both?

Although the entertainment system is an option, it will be worth every penny for parents making a trek of more than an hour with more than one child. Fremont used car customers will also enjoy the fold-down split rear seats that will slide into the floor. They can be moved with one hand and leave a flat cargo space.

The Odyssey starts at ,580 and that includes the destination fee. If you want the grand supreme model – a Touring Elite with all the bells and whistles, it will run you ,030. Milpitas new car buyers may want to opt for a price in between and can still get plenty of amenities.

The seats are very comfortable according to test riders and are trimmed with leather and there are five children safety seat tethers if you would happen to be brave enough to take that many kids in car seats somewhere all at the same time.

Passengers will find it easier to embark with a lower ground clearance and the absence of the roof rack brings up the aerodynamics. The dash navigation screen has large numbers and letters, making it easy to read at a glance.

The wide console and large, covered storage area will be appreciated by moms needing a place to stow a purse or diaper bag and the console is even removable if you need the space or need access from the front to back seats from the interior. Very clever idea, Honda, and one Fremont used car buyers will love.

Train Like Fuel Efficient Interstates Highways While Cut Billions In Construction Needs

Train Like Fuel Efficient Interstates Highways While Cut Billions In Construction Needs

In 1996 dollars, the Federal Highway Administration has calculated the “weighted rural and urban combined” costs per mile of interstate highway to be .6 million. But simple Interstate Highway rule changes combined with off the shelf technology could allow our Interstates to carry two to four times the traffic more safely while reducing the need for upsizing construction expenditures.

Currently it is recommended to have one car length distance between cars for each 10-mph your car is going. Even with this spacing congested traffic corridors encounter multiple car accidents. Even though the stopping distance may be maintained drivers do not always react quickly enough to avoid hitting the car in front of them if preceding vehicles slow or stop quickly due to traffic.

If the current recommended distance is maintained, a one-mile (5280 ft.) stretch of interstate highway can accommodate about 35 cars at 70 mph. Or about 70 cars during heavy traffic at 30 mph. But if cruse control which applied breaking and throttle using lazier technology to maintain a 20 ft. distance behind the car in front the interstate highway would be safer and carry more cars. Using this simple technology would accommodate about 146 cars at 70 mph. Or the same 146 cars during traffic jams at 30 mph. This would mean four times as many cars per lane during normal traffic and twice as many vehicles during peak times.

In addition to saving the US Tax payers $ 22 million per mile in additional highway construction trying to up size interstates, added fuel efficiency of vehicles drafting at 20 to 25 ft. behind preceding vehicles would save Billion a year in over the road trucking costs. Of course the left lane would need to be designated for use of this new application of technology so the right lane could allow entry exit and emergency stops etc.

When you ride a bike on your own you need to overcome wind resistance it accounts for about 80% of your effort @ 32kmh (20Mph). If you ride behind something that has already disturbed the air, then most of the air that you pass through is moving closer to your speed. The larger the object/s that you are following, the more air is disturbed and the less effort you will need to put in.

Currently there are an estimated 3 million over the road trucks operating on Interstate Highway in the United States.

Average Diesel consumed per truck 16666

Gal cost of Diesel .50

Total fuel per truck per year ,665.00

Potential 40% drafting savings per truck ,666.00

3 Million truck savings ,998,000,000.00

The average 100-truck fleet consumes about 1666600 gallons every year. According to 1997 US 59% of all ground transportation diesel fuel consumed in the US. Studies suggest upwards of 40 percent energy can be saved by drafting (vehicles staying 20 to 25 ft. behind the vehicle ahead). This type of savings could translate into ,000 per truck per year fuel savings for US trucking fleets ( Billion per year).

Hyundai Dealers In Indianapolis Ready For New Fuel Efficient Engine, Standard With Future Model Theta

Hyundai Dealers In Indianapolis Ready For New Fuel Efficient Engine, Standard With Future Model Theta

It seems like money has been spread thin these days, and the same feeling rings true across the automotive industry. But automakers have to do something to heat up sales, and you have to spend money to make it. That is why manufacturers across the board are pouring money into the development of new, cutting-edge engine technologies. Consumer and business focus has shifted towards the new generation of driving, including smaller model vehicles and models that employ hybrid technology.

While the developments seem to be rolling in slower than consumer demand for higher quality, more affordable and more fuel efficient models, the industry has shown a consistent response to the changing dynamic. Hyundai is trying to break its way to the forefront of the engine technology revolution. You’ll still find the same quality Hyundai vehicles at your Indianapolis used Hyundai dealership, but pretty soon drivers will have a chance to leverage unmatched engine technology as part of the new Hyundai platform.

Over the past few years, Hyundai has been in the process of developing its Theta II gasoline direct-injection 2.4-liter engine, offering advanced powertrain technology to achieve a higher fuel rating. When the new engine hits the market, Indianapolis used Hyundai dealerships will feature all but obsolete vehicles. The new engine was developed over a 46 month long period, running the manufacturer 5 million in costs. Regardless, the technology truly does stand as a new innovation in the face of your Indianapolis used car dealer.

This four-cylinder engine is state-of-the-art, combining gasoline direct injection technology, dual continuously variable valve timing and variable induction system technology to form a platform that will rival any other engine on the market. But you won’t find this new innovative engine at Indianapolis used Hyundai dealerships; in the next few years, you’ll have to head to a new car dealer to get a test-drive. The Theta II technology will make its debut in the new 2011 Hyundai Sonata, a car that builds on previous models found at your Indianapolis used car dealer to create a platform of dependability and low total cost of ownership.

For the 2011 Hyundai Sonata, drivers can take advantage of horsepower ranging from 198 to 200 (depending on your trim level choice) that rides on a fuel efficient platform, offering a segment-leading 35 miles per gallon. That’s some serious fuel efficiency – a number that, as of now, you won’t find by visiting your Indianapolis used Hyundai dealer. Six-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmissions are both available on the brand new Hyundai Sonata, offering area drivers the ultimate in flexibility. In the next several years, we should see Hyundai putting this new engine technology to work across its entire line of models.

The new Theta II technology is just another step in the quick progression the auto industry is making towards absolute fuel efficiency. Keep your eyes open over the coming months for more new innovations from manufacturers across the board, who are embracing the industry call for a completely eco-friendly drive.

Keeping Gas Prices Minimal with the Fuel Efficient SUV

Keeping Gas Prices Minimal with the Fuel Efficient SUV

With the rising gas prices, many people who own SUVs are feeling their bank accounts shrink every time they hit the gas pump. Last year at this time an SUV that held 25 gallons of gas cost to fill up. This year the price to fill up that same tank has jumped to and higher. This typically computes to 0-5 per month more in gas expenses. For this reason, we are seeing more used SUVs on the market than ever before as people are trying to get better gas mileage out of their vehicles.

For those of you with large families, life without an SUV is practically impossible. You would have to travel places in separate cars, which would take more gas or you would have to switch to a mini van which is just not an option for some who try to steer clear of the “Mommy van” syndrome.

Thankfully, car manufacturers are listening to the SUV lovers of the world who have been asking for years to have a more fuel efficient SUV. This year, more than ever before, we are seeing an increase in the number of SUVs on the market that are offering good gas mileage. The new SUVs that boast good fuel efficiency are averaging approximately 23 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

One of the best fuel efficient SUVs on the market is the Ford Escape Hybrid. It gets an amazing 36 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway in the front-wheel-drive model. The four-wheel-drive Ford Escape Hybrid gets 33 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. It has excellent cargo space and drives comfortably. The Ford Escape Hybrid starts at about ,000.

In addition to buying a fuel efficient SUV, you can change the way you drive to improve your fuel mileage. Aggressive drivers that accelerate rapidly from a complete stop burn more fuel then those who accelerate gradually. Therefore, you shouldn’t act like you are at the ¼ mile track when the light turns green. The more gradually you accelerate, the better your fuel mileage, creating your own fuel efficient SUV in a sense.

Just because the gas prices are at an all time high does not mean that you have to give up your SUV for a smaller car or mini van. You can research fuel efficient SUVs online and you will find a variety of them available. With all the choices, you will be sure to find one that works for you and your bank account.
