Staying Fuel Efficient On Your Next Road Trip

By: Veronica Scott
Posted: Apr 19, 2011

Back in the days when gas wasn’t so expensive, road trips were extremely popular. Now as gas prices continue to climb, more and more people are choosing to purchase plane tickets or stay home altogether. However, you can still engage in the occasional road trip and save money at the pump by implementing a few fuel economy tricks. These tips are especially effective when you’re gearing up to travel on holidays where highways can become packed and crammed pretty quickly.

1. Clean out your car. This isn’t just for looks or additional storage room, cleaning out the inside of your car will remove unnecessary weight restrictions, which will improve your car’s fuel economy. Additionally, washing and waxing the outside of your car will lower the wind resistance of your vehicle.

2. Check up on maintenance requirements. Have you changed your oil and air filter lately? Is your power steering actually working? These are all things you should consider before taking a road trip, whether it’s two or twenty hours. Driving your car without the proper updates will have a negative impact on your mileage. If you don’t want to tackle this task on your own, have your car checked out by a professional mechanic to save on costs down the road.

3. Check tire pressure. When friction between tires and the road take place, energy is inevitably lost. Therefore, the less contact you have between the tire and the road, the more energy you’re car will sustain. Having your tires at the recommended pressure will not only save on fuel costs, but will improve riding and handling of the car.

4. Avoid high traffic areas. Sometimes this is easier said than done, especially on holidays. However, idling wastes fuel and so if you have a choice, it’s better to plan your trip around times and routes that have less traffic. Maybe you’ll decide to take your road trip overnight, anything is better than rush hour traffic.

5. Conserve your energy. Don’t participate in racing cars or stomping on the gas pedal on this vacation, as those are sure fire ways to burn gas. Try to work with stop lights, not against them. For instance, most stop lights are timed to match speed limits, so if you follow the posted speed you’re more likely to hit green lights. Think about it, doesn’t it seem like every time you’re in a hurry you hit all the red lights?

6. Don’t throw away your savings. This tip might seem pretty obvious, but drivers do it all the time. Don’t waste your car’s energy by cranking up the AC and rolling down the window. Actually, you can conserve more energy if you roll down the windows, but if the heat is just unbearable, choose one or the other.

Taking road trips and traveling to destinations either planned or unknown, are a vital part of enjoying life. You don’t have to let the high gas prices stop you when you implement the tips listed above. Just remember, you save more fuel by actually enjoying the time spent inside the car, rather than speeding to get out of it.

Car hire in Cork is not very difficult to arrange. All that you have to do is to follow a few guidelines and you will have a stress free trip to a wonderful destination.

As soon as you have made your decision start to look at the various car rental services that they have in Cork so that you can choose the best one that suits your needs. If you book it way in advance you are more likely to have fewer problems and also will benefit from cheaper rates.

If you are seeking to have a quiet holiday which is not very expensive you should arrange to visit Ireland during the off season. That means that the summer months, St. Patrick’s weekend and Christmas are out. You will have a better option of car choices as well in the off- peak periods.

If you really want that vacation and are looking to have fun but save a bundle then you should consider getting a cheap Cork car hire deal. With that option you will have the option of renting a smaller car. It will save you money not only on the rental but on fuel costs as well and an added plus is that they will handle better on the narrow country roads of Ireland.

A good tip that you can bear in mind is that if your flight will be getting into Cork late in the night you can always arrange to get your car in the morning. It makes more financial sense.

Always remember that you should rent a car bearing your needs in mind. If you need a lot of space in your car then get one with lots of space. Also be careful to read the fine print in the contracts of the various Cork car rental companies. Ensure that there are no hidden fees or additional charges that were not mentioned from the outset.

Make Your Car 20 % More Fuel Efficient : These Simple Tips Show How

Make Your Car 20 % More Fuel Efficient : These Simple Tips Show How

Apart from checking spark plugs don’t overlook the plug leads, including the oft forgotten lead from the distributor to the ignition coil. If these are old then they can cause misfires and poor or even no starting in damp conditions. Change them if you think they’re suspect.

It probably seems elementary but having the tyres at the correct pressures can make a real difference to your car’s fuel consumption, up to 8% if they’re too soft.

Make a saving of 10% just by driving smoothly, no drag take offs! And braking in good time helps.

Get into the highest gear possible as soon as your car is ‘happy’ with it. Less throttle, more cash in your pocket. Obviously, don’t slog up hills in top gear or you will lose any savings you’ve gained so far.

You wouldn’t normally walk around with your pockets full of lead, so it makes sense to get everything unnecessary out of your car. That weight saving just saved you some hard earned cash.

It’s nice to put the air-conditioning on when it’s a hot day, but that cold breeze is costing you fuel as the pump saps power out of your car’s engine.

We’ve all done it but don’t idle the engine unnecessarily, the engine doesn’t warm up quickly and apart from wasting fuel, there’s always the risk of wear inside the car’s engine.

Beware of the heated rear window, that imposes a load on the alternator, increasing it’s resistance and making the engine work harder. Fortunately, a lot of cars have heated rear windows which switch off automatically after a period of time.

And finally, if you don’t need it, get the roof rack off. Only fit it when you need to use it. It causes drag, which of course wastes fuel but also makes a lot of noise which can be worrying first time, I thought my car’s wheel bearings were failing until I twigged!

And finally, I promise, the best fuel economy  and health tip of all. If you don’t need to use the car, leave the keys on the coffee table. And walk. To the paper shop, the local store, wherever. You’ll feel better, so will your wallet, and so will the planet.

Downers Grove Hyundai Dealer Excited About Fuel Efficient 2011 Hyundai Azera

Downers Grove Hyundai Dealer Excited About Fuel Efficient 2011 Hyundai Azera

This year’s Chicago Auto Show was one of the most exciting of its kind in terms of fuel efficient engine technology. A lot of vehicles we’ve already seen unveiled were on display at the show, and a lot more vehicles looking to break the mold on the industry were debuted. All in all, the show served as a pretty good indicator that the auto industry is finally back on the right track following the failure of the Big Three manufacturers, a heavily recessed economy and a horrible 2009 year for automotive sales.

One of my favorite vehicles at this year’s auto show was the Hyundai Azera, a solid sedan that received updated engine options offering better power and higher fuel efficiency. Downers Grove Hyundai drivers should definitely want to learn more about this innovative new vehicle. In addition to the engine update, the new 2011 Azera also got a subtle styling makeover and some other technical improvements. But the updates your Pugi Hyundai dealer is most excited about are the new 3.3-liter Lambda V6 engine that puts out 260 horsepower and 233 pound-feet of torque – as well as the 3.8-liter V6 that pumps 283 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. The fuel economy numbers on both engines are pretty impressive, logging 20 and 19 miles per gallon in city driving and 28 and 27 miles per gallon on the highway respectively.

Still more impressive are the other new technical components, like the variable valve timing, featured on both the intake and exhaust sides of the vehicle. The variable intake system (VIS) adds more power for better acceleration and passing performance. Hyundai dealers in Downers Grove are extremely happy to see these new, more powerful and more efficient models crossing from conception to reality and expect some increased interest when the 2011 car season picks up. For even better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, the new Azera leverages a standard six-speed automatic transmission that is smaller, lighter and more compact in size than any other transmission of its kind available today. These innovative features should keep drivers visiting their Downers Grove Hyundai store.

The styling updates on the brand new Azera help establish a more premium, modern look for the already attractive vehicle. A subtly revised front fascia with a redesigned front grille helps modernize the front of the vehicle’s look a little bit, while rear LED taillights and a slightly redesigned bumper with integrated chrome exhaust tailpipes add to the rear end’s attractiveness. Pugi Hyundai drivers are excited about the prospect of driving this new, attractive, powerful and fuel efficient version of the popular Azera, and pretty soon they will have the chance.

As the automotive market continues its progression towards fuel efficiency, expect Hyundai dealers in Downers Grove to contribute in setting the tone for a new era in driving. Truly, the automotive market is at a place that no manufacturer would have predicted ten years ago, and we continue the race for zero emissions as the decade begins.

Hollywood, FL Buick Dealers Offer Fuel Efficient Technology

Hollywood, FL Buick Dealers Offer Fuel Efficient Technology

In the competitive automotive industry, manufacturers are continuously trying to improve their models and are introducing unnecessary technologies in the process. Yes, night vision systems are cool, but they also require drivers to direct their attention to the dash mounted night vision system instead of on the road where the focus should be. Adaptive headlamps are cool but they tend to do little or nothing to improve nighttime vision. Many of the newer technologies that automakers are introducing aren’t necessarily imperative for a car to operate and they typically don’t enhance safety, fuel efficiency or performance.

Buick is one of a few automakers that is introducing technology that actually enhances performance. eAssist is a feature that will be integrated in the 2012 LaCrosse and Regal models and will be available at your Miami Buick LaCrosse dealership this Fall. The eAssist system uses a lithium ion battery, an electric induction motor-generator and a regenerative braking capability to improve fuel economy. The system enhances fuel economy ratings to an estimated 37 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in the city which is ideal for FL residents and other city dwellers.

The eAssist technology allows drivers to achieve excellent fuel efficiency without having to sacrifice the premium driving experience that the LaCrosse and Regal deliver. The Regal is powered by a 2.4-liter direct injected four cylinder engine which is good for 182 horsepower and is available at your Hoolywood, FL Buick dealer with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Both engines pack in the power and with the new eAssist system, will retain this powerful performance while improving gas mileage by as much as 25%.

The LaCrosse will also be equipped with the eAssist technology and is expected to go on sale at your Miami Buick LaCrosse dealer later this year. The system will work in together with a 2.4-liter Ecotec direct injection four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission to optimize fuel economy by 25%. The car retains its powerful performance that is capable of delivering 182 horsepower with the help of the 15 horsepower of electrical assistance the eAssist technology provides.

The eAssist technology will be standard on all 2012 Buick and LaCrosse models and will likely carry over to other Buick models. Pricing for the LaCrosse and Regal equipped with the technology has not yet been released, however Miami residents can expect both cars to be available at their Hollywood, FL Buick dealer for under ,000. While many automakers are continuing to integrate their vehicles with needless technologies, Buick’s eAssist is a valuable system that all drivers will benefit from.

Fuel Efficient Suvs From General Motors

Fuel Efficient Suvs From General Motors

The call for fuel efficient vehicles is increasing and so is the number of hybrid vehicles launched by automakers. Asian automakers are leading the pack with their hybrid cars. Toyota is the most famous, of course, with its compact Prius. Hybrids in the past are usually small cars, but when American automakers are concerned, their answer is to come up with large SUV hybrids.

Detroit automaker General Motors recently announced that they are expecting their SUV hybrids to be popular among auto buyers as these hybrids consume less fuel than the gasoline-only variants, reported The USA Today. According to the automaker, about 40 percent more fuel is consumed by non-hybrid SUVs compared to the hybrid variants. What this means is that the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrids and the GMC Yukon Hybrids are expected to have a gas mileage of about 19 to 20 mpg when it comes to city driving.

Initially General Motors announced that these hybrid SUVs are expected to offer 25 percent fuel consumption savings. The 40 percent prediction by the automaker will give their SUV hybrids with gas mileages comparable to some midsize or full size sedans. Furthermore, the fuel efficiency of these large SUVs will be better than some crossover SUVs.

The crossover SUV segment is currently the most competitive in the auto market. The reason for this is that crossover SUVs are designed to have the flexibility of SUVs and the fuel efficiency, handling, and performance of a car. But with the presence of large SUV hybrids with fuel efficiency better than crossovers, it can be expected that it will be making waves in the auto market.

The introduction of the SUV hybrids is one of the steps being taken by the automaker to meet the demand for eco-friendly vehicles. The hybrid variants of the GMC Yukon and the Chevrolet Tahoe are expected to appear in showrooms across the country this fall. The SUVs will use the two-mode hybrid system that was developed by the automaker in collaboration with BMW and Chrysler.

Aside from the Tahoe and the Yukon, General Motors is also planning to use the two-mode hybrid system with other nameplates for the next model year. The Cadillac Escalade is slated to receive a hybrid powertrain next year and so are Saturn vehicles. With General Motors’ turnaround plan, it looks as if every marque under it will be given a hybrid. These SUVs are expected to do well in the market, something that the defunct Geo brand failed to do with its Geo oxygen sensor-equipped vehicles.

Mark Cieslak, the chief engineer for General Motors’ full size trucks, said that the demand for full-size SUVs is still present. With more fuel efficient SUVs coming into dealerships this fall, General Motors is expecting to boost sales and increase market share in the country.

If the hybrid SUVs from General Motors an indeed save more fuel than crossovers, this will give the automaker the upper hand in terms of sales. Americans are known for their affinity for roomy vehicles like SUVs. With hybrid SUVs, auto buyers can enjoy the flexibility of these large vehicles and at the same time consume less fuel.

General Motors announced that they are planning to produce 10,000 hybrid SUVs this year. According to The USA Today, this is an ambitious mark since no hybrid SUVs have already been released thus the automaker cannot gauge the level of acceptance for hybrid SUVs.

Consumer Reports Cited Fuel Efficient Suvs

Consumer Reports Cited Fuel Efficient Suvs

With the prices of gas and fuel increasing steadily, consumers tend to turn their backs on the sport utility vehicle (SUV) market. Sports utility vehicles after all has a reputation for being gas guzzlers and that is why most consumers now opt for more fuel efficient smaller cars like a sedan or a coupe.

But the versatility and the loading capacity of an SUV is hard to match, even by large sedans. That is why Consumer Reports came out with a list of the most fuel efficient SUVs to help consumers choose the right kind of vehicle that would suit their needs and wants as well as their budgets. The list of the best and worst SUVs when it comes to fuel economy is the result of a battery of tests that were performed by Consumer Reports on the SUVs that are currently available in the market.

“With more crossovers, hybrids, and car-based SUVs entering the market, it’s now much easier to find an SUV that gets gas mileage similar to a midsized sedan,” Rik Paul, the Automotive Editor for Consumer Reports, quipped. The editor also pointed out that consumers can save a lot of money that is usually spent on fuel simply by doing research before choosing a car to buy. And the magazine has provided prospective car buyers with a comprehensive list of the best and the worst fuel efficient SUVs in the market so as to aid them in choosing a vehicle.

Aside from giving their readers an idea which vehicles are noteworthy, they also showed them which vehicles to avoid where fuel economy is concerned. The information presented by Consumer Reports is a great help to prospective car buyers. What can be more helpful though are the pieces of information about choosing aftermarket parts for the vehicle like EBC brake rotors or other car parts.

Some of the sport utility vehicles tested by Consumer Reports posted gas mileage which is similar to that of a conventional family sedan. Models like the Ford Escape Hybrid, the Saturn Vue Green Line, and the Toyota RAV-4 model that uses a 4-cylinder engine each posted 23-26 miles per gallon, and that is not far from gas mileage ratings achieved by some sedans. While there are SUVs that boasts of good fuel economy, there are also those that would burn a hole in your pocket with gas mileage ratings that seem to use up each gallon of fuel faster than you can say jag. Small SUVs which have performed poorly on the fuel economy tests are the Kia Sorento LX, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, and the Jeep Liberty Sport.

The tests conducted by Consumer Reports gave a result of an equally weighted average of city, highway, and one-day trip gas mileage ratings. For the city driving gas mileage rating, Consumer Reports simulated stop-and-go driving with a total of 18 stops, four minutes of idling, and speeds reaching up to 40 miles per hour. For the highway mpg rating, testers drove the vehicles through eight 5-mile laps with a constant speed of 65 miles per hour.

To find out the gas mileage rating of the vehicles for a one-day trip, testers pushed the vehicles through 155 miles in a day. The trip is constituted by 26 percent freeway driving, 11 percent two-lane highway, and 63 percent varied countryside roads with turns and minute elevation differences.
