Staying Fuel Efficient On Your Next Road Trip

By: Veronica Scott
Posted: Apr 19, 2011

Back in the days when gas wasn’t so expensive, road trips were extremely popular. Now as gas prices continue to climb, more and more people are choosing to purchase plane tickets or stay home altogether. However, you can still engage in the occasional road trip and save money at the pump by implementing a few fuel economy tricks. These tips are especially effective when you’re gearing up to travel on holidays where highways can become packed and crammed pretty quickly.

1. Clean out your car. This isn’t just for looks or additional storage room, cleaning out the inside of your car will remove unnecessary weight restrictions, which will improve your car’s fuel economy. Additionally, washing and waxing the outside of your car will lower the wind resistance of your vehicle.

2. Check up on maintenance requirements. Have you changed your oil and air filter lately? Is your power steering actually working? These are all things you should consider before taking a road trip, whether it’s two or twenty hours. Driving your car without the proper updates will have a negative impact on your mileage. If you don’t want to tackle this task on your own, have your car checked out by a professional mechanic to save on costs down the road.

3. Check tire pressure. When friction between tires and the road take place, energy is inevitably lost. Therefore, the less contact you have between the tire and the road, the more energy you’re car will sustain. Having your tires at the recommended pressure will not only save on fuel costs, but will improve riding and handling of the car.

4. Avoid high traffic areas. Sometimes this is easier said than done, especially on holidays. However, idling wastes fuel and so if you have a choice, it’s better to plan your trip around times and routes that have less traffic. Maybe you’ll decide to take your road trip overnight, anything is better than rush hour traffic.

5. Conserve your energy. Don’t participate in racing cars or stomping on the gas pedal on this vacation, as those are sure fire ways to burn gas. Try to work with stop lights, not against them. For instance, most stop lights are timed to match speed limits, so if you follow the posted speed you’re more likely to hit green lights. Think about it, doesn’t it seem like every time you’re in a hurry you hit all the red lights?

6. Don’t throw away your savings. This tip might seem pretty obvious, but drivers do it all the time. Don’t waste your car’s energy by cranking up the AC and rolling down the window. Actually, you can conserve more energy if you roll down the windows, but if the heat is just unbearable, choose one or the other.

Taking road trips and traveling to destinations either planned or unknown, are a vital part of enjoying life. You don’t have to let the high gas prices stop you when you implement the tips listed above. Just remember, you save more fuel by actually enjoying the time spent inside the car, rather than speeding to get out of it.

Quick Tips To Efficient Car Rental

Quick Tips To Efficient Car Rental

If you are thinking of taking a trip to Ireland then Cork will more than likely be on your itinerary. The best way to see this wonderful place is to do it by car. Car hire in Cork is not very difficult to arrange. All that you have to do is to follow a few guidelines and you will have a stress free trip to a wonderful destination.

As soon as you have made your decision start to look at the various car rental services that they have in Cork so that you can choose the best one that suits your needs. If you book it way in advance you are more likely to have fewer problems and also will benefit from cheaper rates.

If you are seeking to have a quiet holiday which is not very expensive you should arrange to visit Ireland during the off season. That means that the summer months, St. Patrick’s weekend and Christmas are out. You will have a better option of car choices as well in the off- peak periods.

If you really want that vacation and are looking to have fun but save a bundle then you should consider getting a cheap Cork car hire deal. With that option you will have the option of renting a smaller car. It will save you money not only on the rental but on fuel costs as well and an added plus is that they will handle better on the narrow country roads of Ireland.

A good tip that you can bear in mind is that if your flight will be getting into Cork late in the night you can always arrange to get your car in the morning. It makes more financial sense.

Always remember that you should rent a car bearing your needs in mind. If you need a lot of space in your car then get one with lots of space. Also be careful to read the fine print in the contracts of the various Cork car rental companies. Ensure that there are no hidden fees or additional charges that were not mentioned from the outset.

PULSAR – A fuel-efficient solar car

PULSAR – A fuel-efficient solar car

All car buyers take note – Here is a car that can give you about 2,000 kilometers for every liter of gasoline!! If that is not a mean machine then what is. PULSAR, a solar car designed by the students of University of PURDUE, promises to bring your gasoline bills down in a big way. With this solar powered car now, you can do the travelling for one full month or more, and pay for only one liter of gasoline!!

More about PULSAR

First things – This is the solar car of the century, and is different in most aspects from other solar impostors. It has three wheels, and weighs light (At about 50 Pounds). The panels have photovoltaic cells, which help in converting solar energy to electricity, which is further fed on to a motor.

Solar energy has been efficiently used in many solar cars. But solar powered cars have one inherent disadvantage – They just don’t run as fast as compared to a Lamborghini or a SUV! Well, if you are driving on a crowded city road, you would have wanted a vehicle that runs on 40 miles an hour, and not more, lest you risk accidents.

To PULSAR’s credit, it has no misthoughts of being a wonder car. With a maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour tops, you have a solar car in your gallery that will give you good value for money.

Things to be improved about PULSAR

1. PULSAR can be driven only in areas that have a predominantly sunny climate. When it snows in your city virtually all year around and with the sun playing hide and seek most of times, this solar car can be virtually ineffective.

2. Though the car designers are not saying it, one thing is for sure – This car would need a high degree of maintenance. The photovoltaic cells need to be kept in top shape at all times.

3. By the looks of it, PULSAR does not look like a family car. It can thus be useful if you wish to drive down to your office and come back to your home.

PULSAR is definitely not a car for you to have your family in this solar car and zoom away for a long weekend. You could possibly take multiple trips, if you want, and yet not pay a lot for the gasoline. With 2000 kilometers per liter of petrol, you wouldn’t really mind paying a fortune for this car, isn’t it?

Thumbs up to PULSAR!!!

Make Your Car 20 % More Fuel Efficient : These Simple Tips Show How

Make Your Car 20 % More Fuel Efficient : These Simple Tips Show How

Apart from checking spark plugs don’t overlook the plug leads, including the oft forgotten lead from the distributor to the ignition coil. If these are old then they can cause misfires and poor or even no starting in damp conditions. Change them if you think they’re suspect.

It probably seems elementary but having the tyres at the correct pressures can make a real difference to your car’s fuel consumption, up to 8% if they’re too soft.

Make a saving of 10% just by driving smoothly, no drag take offs! And braking in good time helps.

Get into the highest gear possible as soon as your car is ‘happy’ with it. Less throttle, more cash in your pocket. Obviously, don’t slog up hills in top gear or you will lose any savings you’ve gained so far.

You wouldn’t normally walk around with your pockets full of lead, so it makes sense to get everything unnecessary out of your car. That weight saving just saved you some hard earned cash.

It’s nice to put the air-conditioning on when it’s a hot day, but that cold breeze is costing you fuel as the pump saps power out of your car’s engine.

We’ve all done it but don’t idle the engine unnecessarily, the engine doesn’t warm up quickly and apart from wasting fuel, there’s always the risk of wear inside the car’s engine.

Beware of the heated rear window, that imposes a load on the alternator, increasing it’s resistance and making the engine work harder. Fortunately, a lot of cars have heated rear windows which switch off automatically after a period of time.

And finally, if you don’t need it, get the roof rack off. Only fit it when you need to use it. It causes drag, which of course wastes fuel but also makes a lot of noise which can be worrying first time, I thought my car’s wheel bearings were failing until I twigged!

And finally, I promise, the best fuel economy  and health tip of all. If you don’t need to use the car, leave the keys on the coffee table. And walk. To the paper shop, the local store, wherever. You’ll feel better, so will your wallet, and so will the planet.

Honda Gains Rise on Fuel-saving Cars

Honda Gains Rise on Fuel-saving Cars

The Honda Motor Co. announced last Wednesday that its first-quarter gains increased by 16 percent and such have been buoyed by demand for fuel-saving product lines in the United States and a weaker yen.

Additionally, net income of the second biggest Japanese automaker increased to ¥166.1 billion, or .4 billion, in the three months ended June 30, as compared with its ¥143.4 billion in 2006. Honda won customers in the United States, its biggest market, from domestics General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. with its Civic compact cars and CR-V SUVs.

The Tokyo-based automaker earns as much as 70 percent of its operating profit in the United States and benefited from a 5.3 percent drop in the value of Japanese currency against the dollar in the quarter, reported International Herald Tribune. Honda’s world-wide sales rose 5.6 percent to 946,000 vehicles from the same period last year.

Heat is building up and it must be controlled by a Honda del sol radiator. As the competition gets even tougher, precise strategies are crucial. In June, Honda and the Toyota Motor Corp. increased production to meet rising demand from North America, Europe and Asia. Toyota raised global production 3.6 percent to 734,354 vehicles in June while Honda’s global output rose four percent to 340,400 vehicles, the companies said in separate statements.

Toyota surpassed GM as the world’s biggest automaker by sales in the first half of this year, bolstered by vehicle demand in the U.S. Honda increased its full-year sales and gain forecasts amid surging demand for its fuel- efficient Civic models, reported Bloomberg.

“Exports to North America have been strong,” said Hirofumi Yokoi, an analyst at CSM Worldwide, an auto industry consulting firm. “Japanese and Korean carmakers will continue to grab market share away from Detroit.”

Toyota’s overseas production rose 7.2 percent, while output in Japan increased by 0.3 percent to 368,513. The automaker’s exports rose 9.6 percent to 242,101 and Honda exported 55,207 vehicles, down by 2.8 percent. Meanwhile, Honda’s domestic production dived by 4.8 percent while overseas output climbed 9.2 percent, Bloomberg added.

Moreover, July domestic production is expected to decline as Japan’s 12 automakers lost output of at least 120,000 vehicles after Riken Corp., Japan’s biggest piston rings supplier, ceased production because of a July 16 quake in Niigata area. Carmakers will likely make up for the lost production by the end of the fiscal year, said Fujio Cho, the chairman of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Even amid increasing raw-material costs and expenses related to new production facilities Honda’s net is bolstered. The automaker said that its brisk sales and the positive effects of the weak yen, which helps Japanese automakers by increasing the value of overseas earnings when converted into Japanese currency, led to its net profit of 166.1 billion yen or .38 billion in the three months ended June 30, up from 143.4 billion yen in the same period in 2006.

Honda increased its net-profit forecast for the year ending March 31 to 625 billion yen, a 5.5 percent increase from the year earlier. Honda’s estimates were based on a conservative exchange rate of 115 yen to the dollar. So far this fiscal year, the dollar has remained at about 120 yen, causing the car maker to recalculate its earning, said Amy Chozick, an automotive writer.

Last week, Chief Executive Takeo Fukui said that Honda will increase its capacity world-wide to meet demand. A new U.S. car plant will open next year with an annual capacity to produce as many as 200,000 vehicles. Honda expects annual production in North America to reach 1.62 million vehicles by the fall of 2008, up from 1.4 million cars this year.

The most fuel-efficient mainstream car currently in production

Peugeot has been producing the 308 since 2007; it is a small family car that replaces the Peugeot 307. The 308 uses the same chassis as the 307 with a slightly longer and wider body shell. The 308 is available as a 3 door, 5 door, convertible and estate model. On its release the 308 held the record for the most fuel-efficient mainstream car, over a distance of 14,580 km the 308 averaged 90.2 mpg.

The convertible model of the 308 is the strategic replacement for the 307 convertible, the <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.westovergroup.co.uk/peugeot/new-cars/view/391/Peugeot-308″>new Peugeot 308 cc</a> has now been joined by the 3008 which is a SUV or MPV body styled model, which rivals the Nissan Qashqai and VW Touran. A hybrid – diesel 308 model is also in the pipeline with a prototype undergoing heavy testing at the moment.

The 308 CC comes with a choice of 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre petrol and diesel engines, taken from the hatchback model. The power in the convertible models though is slightly down on the hatch back model because the convertible has to lug around an additional 170kilos – the penalty for strengthening.

Due to the re-strengthening the 308 handles very well, it is fun to drive and there is no scuttle shake obviously present. The 308 is no sports car but it’s composed and grippy through corners, steers precisely and rides comfortably.

When it comes to refinement and comfort the Peugeot 308 really does rise above the rest. Small touches like blowers in the front seat backrests to waft warm air around your neck help promote the car’s innovative features.
